Tivoli Storage Manager zorgt er voor dat er eenmalig een volledige back-up wordt gemaakt en dat hierna vervolgens alleen van gewijzigde data op object niveau (file of database) hoeft te worden gemaakt. (We noemen dit ” Forever Incremental”) Hierdoor wordt de doorlooptijd enorm verkort. Omdat data eenvoudig ontdubbeld (deduplicatie) kan worden is minder opslagcapaciteit nodig om een volledige back-up op disk op te slaan. Voor archief en historie opslag kan er gekozen worden voor oa tape en of andere disk tiers zoals bijvoorbeeld SATA wat een goedkopere prijs per GB heeft.
